Vimal Bhai is a member of Matu Jan Sangathan, a grassroots Gandhian organization of people that has been working to hold big hydroelectric projects in the State of Uttrakhand accountable to the people, ecosystem, and law. He has been working on issues concerning hydel projects since the early 1980s. During this time, he has also been associated with key grassroots environmental movements such as the Chipko Andolan and National Alliance of People's movements. He also works on mining issues in Rajasthan, and recently helped the people of Katputli tehsil, Jaipur District, secure an empowering order from the National Green Tribunal, restricting illegal mining activities. Vimal Bhai has also been part of the legal movement that led to the the genesis and smooth functioning of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), and has since secured key orders concerning the stage a challenge to a project permit can be entertained by the court, and standing in environmental lawsuits, building significantly on the jurisprudence developed under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010.
